7th District lawmakers discuss taxes, budget, and rural priorities

Reps. Hunter Abell and Andrew Engell joined seatmate Sen. Shelly Short for their weekly “Live from Olympia” radio program on KOMW Radio to discuss the final weeks of the legislative session, highlighting concerns about a proposed state income tax and ongoing budget negotiations.

The lawmakers pointed to record public participation on the tax proposal, with more than 100,000 Washingtonians signing in opposition before the House hearing. Rep. Abell said the response shows strong concern across the state, while both representatives warned the policy could expand over time and would not generate revenue immediately. Rep. Engell added that future legislatures could change income thresholds without voter approval.

Sen. Short also noted significant growth in the state budget over the past decade and cautioned against building ongoing spending with temporary funding sources.

The legislators shared updates on local efforts, including bills supporting rural health care access, veterans, and community services, and emphasized the importance of ensuring statewide policies work for rural areas.

With session entering its final stretch, they encouraged constituents to stay informed and engaged as key decisions are made in the weeks ahead.
